Short answer
Every screen is laid out for the Siri Remote: a cinematic Home with a backdrop hero, Continue Watching and your latest titles, then the libraries. Detail pages carry cast and crew, More Like This and the episode list, and the player hides its interface after five seconds so the film has the screen.
The hybrid engine sends mp4, m4v and mov files with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC-3, E-AC-3, MP3, ALAC or FLAC audio to Apple’s player, which keeps HDR and Dolby Vision intact, and everything else, MKV included, to VLC. Your server does not transcode video for either path, which matters on a NAS with no GPU.
Jellyfin Media Segments drive the Skip pills, Next Up auto-advances the series, and scrubbing shows trickplay thumbnails from the server. Subtitles come embedded, from a sidecar, or downloaded inside the app through the server’s remote search, OpenSubtitles and Podnapisi.
Channels with the guide, one-off and series recordings with padding, a full music player with system Now Playing, and photo slideshows. Switch the Apple TV’s Jellyfin profile from your iPhone over Quick Connect instead of typing a PIN with the remote, and hand the remote to the kids with Kids Mode on.
